US imports of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) dropped by 69pc in March as additional US import tariffs on China went into effect.
The US imported 10,900 metric tonnes of MDI in March, down from 35,500t in March 2024 and from 26,000t February, according to data compiled by Global Trade Tracker (GTT).
The largest share of imports in March came from Germany at 5,900t, about 54pc of the market share. Belgium and South Korea were second and third at 26pc and 9pc of the total, respectively.
China dropped out of the top three spots in March as additional tariffs on Chinese imports went into effect in February and March. Chinese imports have held the largest share of US imported MDI since 2017 on a yearly basis, based on GTT data. About 27t of MDI arrived from China to the US in March, according to GTT.
US president Donald Trump imposed 10pc tariffs on all imports from China on 4 February, then doubled the rate to 20pc effective 4 March. Multiple increases followed, resulting in a final hike to 145pc on 10 April.
The US exported 26,600t of MDI in March up by 27pc from the month before and March 2024. Canada and Mexico were the top two destinations for US MDI in March. Canada received 14,500t and Mexico 4,700t, according to GTT data.
The US flipped to a net exporter in March after nine consecutive months as a net importer of MDI.
