Laos halts approvals for potash mines in Vientiane

Laos halts approvals for potash mines in Vientiane

Singapore, 4 July (Argus) — The Lao government has halted all surveys, exploration and implementation of potash projects in capital Vientiane, according to a notice issued on 1 July by the Standing Committee of the National Assembly of Laos. The government will also evaluate and inspect projects that have already been implemented. Currently, at least two China-invested projects — by producers Zangge and Yuntianhua — located in Vientiane are likely to be impacted. This notice comes after the people's government of Vientiane submitted a petition to the National Economic, Technology and Environmental Committee in September 2024 to conduct an investigation and evaluation on the impact of these potash mines, and follows a landslide that occurred in Tongmang village in Vientiane on 1 June 2025 and caused damage to residential properties. This decision is likely driven by concerns for environmental protection as well as safety of the residents in Vientiane. The decision will not impact any of the other potash projects, namely Lao Kaiyuan and Asia Potash, which are located around 400km away in Khammoune province. Zangge and Yuntianhua are still waiting on further guidance from the Lao government and have not provided any comment on the matter. Yuntianhua's 500,000 t/yr Ruiyuan Richfield project started commercial production at the end of 2024, while Zangge's 1mn t/yr project construction has been delayed from 2024 to 2025, without a clear start date. Global fertilizer affordability near three-year low

Global fertilizer affordability near three-year low

London, 2 July (Argus) — Global affordability for fertilizers has dropped to its lowest in nearly three years on a sustained increase in fertilizer prices — as strong global demand competes for limited supply — while crop values have dipped to the lowest since September 2020. Nutrient affordability fell to 0.75 points in June, the lowest since September 2022, Argus data show. An affordability index — comprising a fertilizer and crop index — above one indicates that fertilizers are more affordable compared with the base year set in 2004. An index below one indicates lower nutrient affordability. The fertilizer index fell in June owing to higher fertilizer prices for phosphates while an increase in urea prices in June added further support to the index. The Israel-Iran conflict firmed market sentiment across all nutrients in June, which has also added some volatility to freight rates. Phosphate prices saw the largest gains, with June prices at the highest since September 2022 on persistent demand from India in the absence of inflows of Chinese DAP supply. DAP prices have kept moving up as tight supply has kept driving the market at both sides of the Suez Canal. Chinese suppliers have been sitting comfortably with limited supply availability, which enabled them to increase offers in the face of African and southeast Asian demand. In the west, buyers have been struggling to secure limited MAP supply, also supporting prices. On potash, MOP prices have reached the highest in two years driven by geopolitical uncertainty and robust demand in all major markets, particularly in southeast Asia, where affordability levels have been supported by excellent palm oil prices. Meanwhile, on the potash supply side, availability was expected to be reduced from three major producers — Uralkali, Belaruskali and Eurochem — as they underwent maintenance works. Together, these works were expected to reduce MOP output by 1.3mn t across the first half of the year, further underpinning prices. Urea prices rose to the highest in four months as the Middle East conflict pushed prices up on output curtailment while strong fundamentals — driven by Indian demand — continued to support prices. On the other hand, the crop index — which includes global prices for corn, wheat, rice and soybeans adjusted by output volumes — have fallen to a near five-year low. Indonesia seeks stronger potash trade with Belarus

London, 12 June (Argus) — Indonesia is looking to improve trade flows of potash with Belarus after a meeting last week between Indonesian foreign minister Sugiono and the Belarusian ambassador to Jakarta. Sugiono intends to enhance "co-operation in potash" with Belarus to support the Indonesian government's goal of "achieving national food security", the foreign ministry said in an official statement. Belarus is one of the world's largest exporters of potash fertilizer. State-owned producer Belaruskali exported more than 10mn t of potash last year. Indonesia is the largest importer of potash in southeast Asia and applies most of the fertilizer to the country's large palm oil plantations. Indonesia sourced almost a fifth of its total MOP imports from Belarus last year. Indonesia imported 245,000t of MOP from Belarus last year, in addition to roughly 406,000t of MOP from Uzbekistan, the majority of which is likely to be from Belarus, GTT data show. In the first four months of this year, MOP imports from Belarus and Uzbekistan totalled about 331,000t. Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto has outlined food security as a core objective of his government. Since coming to power in October, his administration has introduced plans to increase agricultural output by converting some of the country's swamplands into rice fields. Canpotex potash sales fully committed through Q3

Houston, 10 June (Argus) — Canadian potash distributor Canpotex is fully committed on its potash sales volumes through the end of September. The marketer said this is a result of "continued strong demand for potash", citing firm fundamentals for agricultural commodities and sustained focus on food security in various key markets. Canpotex is the joint marketing arm of North American fertilizer producers Nutrien and Mosaic, and exports potash to non-North American markets, primarily through the western Canadian port of Vancouver. Nutrien weighing options to increase potash exports

Houston, 3 June (Argus) — Canadian fertilizer producer Nutrien is considering options to increase its west coast potash port capacity in anticipation of rising global demand. Increasing potash export capacity on the west coast of North America is part of Nutrien's long-term strategy to strengthen supply chain resilience, the producer said. It is unclear, however, if Nutrien would focus on building extra capacity in the US or Canada. Currently Canpotex — Nutrien and US fertilizer producer Mosaic's joint potash marketing arm — exports roughly 13mn metric tonnes (t) annually. Nutrien has not shied away from sharing its strong potash demand outlook , noting in its first quarter earnings report that it expects global potash shipments in 2025 to range from 71mn-75mn t. Global potash shipments in 2024 reached 72.5mn t, exceeding their forecast from 68mn-71mn t. The MOP Nola price for the week ended 30 May was $327.50/st fob, up by 28pc from the start of January.
