Canadian fertilizer producer Nutrien is considering options to increase its west coast potash port capacity in anticipation of rising global demand.
Increasing potash export capacity on the west coast of North America is part of Nutrien's long-term strategy to strengthen supply chain resilience, the producer said. It is unclear, however, if Nutrien would focus on building extra capacity in the US or Canada.
Currently Canpotex — Nutrien and US fertilizer producer Mosaic's joint potash marketing arm — exports roughly 13mn metric tonnes (t) annually.
Nutrien has not shied away from sharing its strong potash demand outlook, noting in its first quarter earnings report that it expects global potash shipments in 2025 to range from 71mn-75mn t. Global potash shipments in 2024 reached 72.5mn t, exceeding their forecast from 68mn-71mn t.
