The Argus assessment for premium low-volatile (PLV) hard coking coal delivered on a fob Australia basis started last year on a firm footing, reaching a 2024 high of $336.65/t fob in mid-January before sliding below $300/t fob by early March. In the cfr China market, concerns over tightening domestic coking coal supply mounted after higher snowfall and lower temperatures in north China disrupted production. This resulted in the fob Australia-cfr China premium hard coking coal (PHCC) arbitrage opening again on 30 January.
